In overseas markets, electric cars are all the rage and are increasing in number. However, in India, these cars have recently made a foray in the market, and we currently have a very limited choice. We shortlist a few cars available at the best prices.
1) Tata Nexon EV
Price: ₹ 13.99 Lakh
In terms of styling, the Nexon EV looks like the regular Nexon, barring the blue accent highlights on the exteriors. It gets a bold front fascia with Range Rover-inspired headlights, flared wheel arches, a high-set bonnet, a sloping roofline and a sharp crease on the sides. The Nexon EV gets a 30.3kWh lithium-ion battery pack that powers a motor on the front axle which makes 127bhp and 245Nm of torque, propelling the SUV from 0-100kph in 9.9 seconds. The battery will take an hour to charge up to 80% using a CCS2-compatible DC fast charger, while it takes 8-9 hours to charge to 100% with the help of a 15A AC charger. Features include an 8-speaker Harman-sourced speaker system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, auto headlamps and wipers, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, dual-tone colour options, keyless entry and go, power adjustable and folding mirrors, automatic climate control, sunroof, height-adjustable driver’s seat and ZConnect that comes with 35 features. Users will have access to 300 DC fast chargers in the country and will eventually expand to 650 outlets. The company provides a free home charger, while mobile charging services will be available in metro cities.
2) Tata Tigor EV
Price: ₹ 9.44 Lakh
The Tata Tigor looks like the Tiago hatchback, but the boot extension seems to have been executed very well. In fact, this ‘styleback’ is one the nicest looking cars in its segment, with those peeled-back headlamps, mesh grille, sharp creases along the sides and a coupe-like roof line at the rear. Power comes from a 21.5kWh battery pack, and the 72V, 3-phase AC induction motor produces 40bhp and 105Nm of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels via a single-speed gearbox. A range of 213kms is possible from the extended range version. Features include a height-adjustable driver’s seat, 14-inch alloy wheels, 2-DIN audio system by Harman with Bluetooth, USB and AUX connectivity and LED tail lamps. On the safety front, it is equipped with dual airbags and ABS. The Tigor EV is sold in three shades: Pearlescent white, Egyptian blue and Roman Silver. Inside the car, there is sufficient room; the front seats are very supportive and the rear occupants have nothing to complain about either. The motor is very smooth, and in Sport mode, the car can reach a top speed of 80kph. A warranty period of 3 years is offered on the car.
3) MG ZS EV
Price: ₹ 20.88 Lakh
The ZS EV gets a bold grille up-front that protrudes slightly ahead of the headlamps, similar to what you’ve seen on Mazdas. It gets a well sculpted bumper and a distinctive headlight design. The bonnet has raised impressions while the side profile consists of two prominent creases. At the rear, the SUV looks nice and sporty with a skid plate below. Power is channeled to the front wheels via a single-speed automatic transmission. The SUV manages to sprint from 0-100kph in 8.5 seconds. It can also cover a range of 340kms, thanks to a 44.5kWh, liquid-cooled battery. Three driving modes along with three levels of regenerative braking are available, and its IP-67 certified lithium-ion battery is worth a mention too. Features include leatherette seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic projector headlamps with LED DRLs, power adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry/go, rain-sensing wipers, panoramic sunroof, 8-inch touchscreen and tyre pressure monitoring system. The battery can be charged up to 80% with the help of a 50kW DC fast charger.
4) Hyundai Kona
Price: ₹ 23.72 Lakh
The Hyundai Kona gets slim headlights up-front, flanked a slender matte grey accent, while the main lights are housed in the bumper. The bonnet gets a few ripples on it, and you will also see plastic cladding around, particularly on the wheel arches, giving it a crossover look. It looks stylish from the side, while the rear boasts of slender tail lamps. It can cover a range of 452kms, thanks to a 39.2kWh lithium-ion battery which can be charged with the help of a 50kW DC fast charger in nearly an hour. Features include, paddle shifters, three drive modes, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, head-up display, automatic climate control, wireless charging, heated wing mirrors, heated and ventilated front seats, powered sunroof, 10-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat and an electric parking brake.
